A smoother tax process begins with context. The goal is not to gather every document you own, but to assemble a reliable picture of what changed and what needs attention.
1. Prior-year filing package
Your previous return, supporting schedules, and any carryforward information give the preparer a starting point and help surface changes that deserve a question.
2. Income records
Gather the statements, invoices, platform summaries, investment records, and other evidence that applies to your situation. The exact forms and labels vary by jurisdiction.
3. Business or rental activity
Bring a clean summary of income and expenses, plus the underlying records your advisor requests. Keep personal and business activity clearly separated.
4. Major life and financial changes
A move, new business, property transaction, retirement, inheritance, marriage, separation, or change in residency can alter the questions your advisor needs to ask.
5. Tax-authority correspondence
Share complete notices and deadlines through the document process confirmed for your engagement. Do not paste sensitive records into a general website form.
